On Tuesday 11th November 2025, the Cowbridge School community came together for an annual
Remembrance Service to commemorate Armistice Day. This was a time to pause, reflect,
and honour the courage and sacrifice of those who have served, and continue to serve, in
conflicts around the world. The service has become an important tradition in the School,
reminding us of the value of peace, and the debt of gratitude we owe to those who gave their
lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.
This year’s service held special significance as we remembered and honoured former
student, Rhodri Leyshon, whose memory and bravery continue to inspire us all. Rhodri was
a pilot in the Royal Navy who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash in the English
Channel in September 2024. To commemorate his memory, his family commissioned a
bench which now has a central position in the School’s Memorial Garden. It was deeply
moving to see the entire school, from the youngest pupils in the Lower School to the Sixth
Form, gathered together in shared respect and remembrance, and we are grateful to
Rhodri’s sister, Anna, whose presence at the blessing of the bench made the occasion truly
significant.
The event was a huge success - even the weather held out, allowing the service to take
place in the best possible spirit. Our thanks go to everyone who contributed to making the
morning so meaningful: Mrs Thomas, Mr Ling and Rev. Ross Pilliner for their thoughtful
words, the Cowbridge Music Department, orchestra and vocal group for their moving
performances, and the Senior Prefect Team who represented the school with dignity and
pride. Together, they helped ensure that the message of remembrance, of honour, gratitude,
and hope, was powerfully felt by all.
