Diwrnod Shwmae at Ysgol y Bontfaen 2026

What a fantastic week celebrating Diwrnod Shwmae at Ysgol y Bontfaen! Diwrnod Shwmae is celebrated nationally and encourages everyone to start conversations in Welsh, whether that's with a simple 'Shwmae' or something more adventurous! It's all about building confidence, celebrating our Welsh language and encouraging everyone to give Welsh a go, regardless of their ability.

Throughout the week, pupils have been getting involved in a variety of Welsh-themed challenges and activities! Form classes have competed in a daily Cyrdle (Welsh Wordle) challenge and pupils have put their language skills to the test with our very own Welsh Countdown. Also, Years 7, 8 and 9 have done a fantastic job designing hundreds of colourful ‘Shwmae’ bunting flags to decorate the school!

A special ‘Llongyfarchiadau’ goes to Forest L in Year 8, who earned the highest number of ‘Tocyn Iaith – Language Token’ achievement points for his fantastic efforts to use Welsh consistently throughout the week. Da iawn, Forest!

Our Lower School pupils have also been busy celebrating! They enjoyed a special Shwmae assembly and took part in a range of Welsh language activities. Reception had a great time completing their ‘Shwmae Hunt’ with Miss Griffiths, putting their Welsh skills into practice along the way.

To mark the celebrations, pupils and staff also joined forces to create a special Diwrnod Shwmae video for our ‘Cymraeg y Bontfaen’ social media! You can watch our Shwmae video and keep up to date with all things Welsh over on our Instagram page!

Diolch yn fawr iawn i bawb!
A big thank you to all!
