Rotary Vocalist Night 2025

Rotary Young Musician Competition 2025 - Vocalist Night

On a cold wintry evening, the beautiful voices heard at the vocalist night were more than enough to warm the hearts of those present and who had braved the chill to venture to school! The singing was both exhilarating and soothing in equal measure, all of the performers deserve massive credit and praise for their efforts. The standard of professionalism on display via the singers and their excellent accompanists was exceptional. It must also be noted that one accompanist (for Lola Davies) was fellow Year 10 student, Sophie Locke - in a way this meant that there were really nine students participating, the eight vocalists and Sophie on the piano!

Above all, it was the commitment, passion, musical ability and empathy that shone through. The variety of material that the students chose to perform was inspiring in its originality and challenge that it presented. Each of the performers demonstrated deft skills, and the emotion and tone conveyed created a magical feeling within the auditorium. I cannot imagine how daunting the evening may have appeared to the girls but their confidence and innate understanding of their chosen compositions was prevalent for all to hear.

May I take this opportunity to thank Mr. Green (Acting Subject Leader for Music), the Rotary representatives and the adjudication panel for their efforts and clear appreciation of the talented musicians who provided such a wonderful evening’s entertainment.

Above all my sincere congratulations to Isabel Hornsey (Year 9), Emmie Harris (Year 10), Ettie Kempson (Year 10), Lola Davies (Year 10), Tilly Dobson (Year 11), Emily Rideout (Year 11), Lottie Smale (Year 11) and Gwennan Jones (Year 13).

All of the girls acquitted themselves with supreme serenity and their singing was simply delightful - no doubt bright futures beckon but also great enjoyment in pursuing a musical direction with such enthusiasm!

All of the performers received Rotary certificates and, to conclude, the judging panel placed Tilly Dobson as runner up and Gwennan Jones as winner - Gwennan will proceed to the next stage of the competition where, hopefully, she will meet with more success.

Bravo to all!
