Supporting writing skills

When writing with your child, remember it isn't just about putting pen to paper. Effective writing is about making conscious decisions about who they are writing for (audience); why they are writing (purpose); and, the style of writing (tone, vocabulary, punctuation and format / layout). Your child will benefit from your support in developing their ideas, vocabulary and the accuracy of their work, and by encouraging them to actively ‘think’ whilst they write. It’s important to see writing as a process and as something that is never ‘finished!’ Following these steps with your child will be useful.
